TRANSIENCE

January 21, 2019 by Sophie Hamer in WORDS

A piece I wrote about what I've called the 'detournement' of architectural education has, after some time, been published in Charette. The piece is available to read and download online here.

There's something magical about re-reading something you've written after a little time has passed. Things have changed, themes resound in different ways, some phrases are almost embarrassing. But given the topic of 'transience' it feels fitting that, re-reading this, I recognise very clearly the ways in which life and learning are spatial actions. I recognise my own paths since inscribing these words, how I have continued to move through and create and teach space. I'm slowly starting to understand these actions, collectively, as my 'career': aligning with that secondary meaning, more swift, uncontrolled motion than defined stasis. It's these actions that continue to both reflect and inform how I situate myself at any point in time.

Also: New Zealand well represented within; a certain connection with the idea of transience, perhaps?

It is a late start to the season this year, but summer is finally here, and the mountain passes (and dead end roads) are open for exploring. Lac de Derborence surprised me in all the best ways, including finding that perh

Each evening when the shadows get long and the sunlight turns golden, I am surprised by how late the light stays. Spring has been all grey skies and raindrops this year - a far cry from last years month of May, when all I
